Time to Move On: We celebrate our leavers!

Many companies commonly announce new recruits -welcome new staff on internal platforms, newsletters and even write up a press release depending on the position and personal brand of the person. So, celebrating new recruits is an accepted practise; what is not is celebrating leavers.

We accept that it is inevitable that employees will come and go, some after six months, others after decades, and for many different reasons, poor cultural fit, lifestyle change, career change, or a new challenge, retirement etc. When an employee leaves, companies focus on the formalities such as the exit interview but rarely on the human angle.

We at Pathway Group, since around 2012, have been openly celebrating someone’s last day with us; this used to be a smaller individual thing before where the team members closely working with the individual would on an induvial basis get a card, a gift and potential take lunch together. We have moved from this informal, loosely planned exit to something that, as a business, we encourage them to thank them for everything they did and, of course, wish them good luck.

Our focus for the celebration is the person’s contribution to your work experience and finding some way to say best wishes on whatever you do next. Every departure leaving plan is different and considers the individual personality. Each departure generally is marked with a celebration of some sort, as said this could be a team lunch, a leader with the business giving a thank-you-for-your-service speech.

The skills and employability and the profit for purpose sector we operate in are dynamic and shifts quickly. Employee and team relationships move just as swiftly. Despite how long or short one’s service, even the most informal celebrations will keep spirits high across the workforce. We foster a company culture where we will celebrate many farewells and reinforce our company values; celebrating one leaving the nest can remind staff that change is inevitable, but that staff are not simply chattel, but individuals who have made an impact and made up an essential part of the DNA that helped other team members and therefore the business grow.
