Maricica – Empowered Through Functional Skills in English

Maricica enrolled on the Level 2 Functional Skills in English course with the aim of improving her spoken English and gaining the confidence needed to integrate more fully into everyday life in the UK. Prior to joining the course, Maricica struggled with basic communication tasks, such as speaking to people in shops or during job searches, which affected her independence and self-esteem.

"avoided certain public interactions"

One of the main challenges Maricica faced was a lack of confidence in speaking English. This language barrier significantly impacted her ability to manage day-to-day tasks and prevented her from pursuing employment opportunities. Her fear of speaking English meant she avoided certain public interactions and felt limited in what she could achieve personally and professionally.

"great commitment"

Throughout the course, Maricica showed great commitment to developing her language skills. Regular speaking practice in class helped her build both fluency and confidence. The supportive learning environment allowed her to gradually overcome her fears and start using English more naturally in her daily interactions.

In addition to language development, Maricica received guidance on employability skills, including support with writing her CV. This holistic approach ensured that she was not only improving academically but also preparing for the world of work.

"feels significantly more confident"

As a result of her hard work and the support she received, Maricica now feels significantly more confident in speaking English. She can manage everyday tasks, such as shopping and communicating with others, with much greater ease. Encouraged by her progress, Maricica has also begun actively seeking employment and feels much better prepared to enter the workforce.

Maricica’s journey highlights the transformative impact that Functional Skills courses can have on learners. By equipping individuals with essential language skills and the confidence to use them, these programmes support greater independence, improved employability, and enhanced quality of life.
