When Gemma joined our vocational course, she brought with her a willingness to learn and a story of resilience and determination.
Gemma’s confidence was at an all-time low due to a challenging experience in education, compounded by her disclosure of being dyslexic. However, Gemma’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable, and it’s my pleasure to share her inspiring progress.
Understanding Gemma’s specific needs, we discovered that using pink paper for resources and assignments and a pink overlay for textbook research significantly supported her learning. Gemma had previously faced harsh criticism for spelling mistakes related to her dyslexia. In response, I took a different approach, focusing on marking and correcting the errors while providing a word bank for her to refer to—empowering Gemma to see the correct spelling and reinforcing her understanding.
One of Gemma’s standout strengths lies in practical, hands-on learning. She quickly excelled in facial treatments, showcasing remarkable confidence. Gemma’s preferred learning style involves doing and explaining steps to others—a testament to her grasp of practical knowledge.
However, challenges emerged in more intricate work, particularly with lashes. To address this, we implemented a step-by-step approach with 1:1 guidance, transitioning to peer support and fostering independent work. This method has proven highly effective for Gemma, building her competence and boosting her confidence to practice at home and return to class with newfound skills.
I’m delighted to share that Gemma’s enjoyment of written work has soared, marked by her willingness to take on additional tasks and assignments. What’s heartening is the noticeable improvement in her spelling, a testament to her dedication and hard work.
Gemma’s journey reflects the transformative power of personalised support and tailored learning approaches. Her progress inspires us all, highlighting the potential for growth and success when education is approached with empathy, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to individual needs. I am immensely proud of Gemma’s achievements, and I look forward to witnessing her continued success on this remarkable journey.
