Domestic Abuse as a Public Health Crisis

Behind Closed Doors

The scale of domestic abuse in the UK is overwhelming, with millions affected. From coercive control and gaslighting to physical violence, victims often suffer in silence. Children who witness or live with abuse are at particular risk—emotionally and physically.

What You Can Do:

  • Look for warning signs: controlling behaviour, isolation, sudden changes in mood or appearance.

  • Ensure all services (housing, health, education) are trained to recognise and respond.

  • Share helplines and support services widely and visibly.
