In a year when entrepreneurs and business leaders faced unprecedented disruption in all areas of their lives, the awards also celebrated the books that provide invaluable self-development advice and inspirational business stories
Since the awards' inaugural year, the gender imbalance in entries has been gradually improving
Pathway Group is a founding partner of the awards. The Business Book Awards was established through its events management company, it is the organiser of the annual awards that have taken place since 2018.
This year’s Business Book Awards took place at 8 Northumberland Avenue in a glittering ‘black tie’ evening, hosted by businessman Joel Blake OBE.
This year’s event was the fifth anniversary of the Business Book Awards but only the third live final because of the Covid-19 pandemic, so the excitement was even more intense.
There were more than 300 entries, and a team of 40 judges that met in February had the challenging task of preparing the shortlist, with a winner and highly commended in each category.
“It’s been an exceptional year with more entries, entry categories and shortlisted books than ever before, and along with increased quantity, this year’s business book awards have been of fantastic quality,” wrote Lucy McCarraher, founder of the awards in the programme for the evening.
The authors were told by keynote speaker Emma Jones CBE that they were changing lives.Following a degree in law and Japanese, she joined the international accountancy firm Arthur Anderson before setting up Techlocate, which was sold to Tenon plc after 15 years.
She launched Enterprise Nation in 2006, which has grown to a community of more than 75,000 people.
Emma Jones is also the best-selling author of the business books Spare Room StartUP, Working 5 to 9, Go Global, The Startup Kit and Turn Your Talent into a Business.
Safaraz Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Pathway Group and Founder of Thinkfest events, spoke of his amazement at the quality of the books that defied gravity and the brilliant response from the authors, judges and everyone involved.
In his programme foreword, Safaraz took the theme of the importance of ‘thinking in ink’ as set out by journalist and communications strategist Alistair Campbell.
“Writing in all forms can be hugely cathartic and help us to understand and refine, never mind articulate our thoughts,” wrote Safaraz.
