Levelling up the long road ahead

Inflation hits us all hard was a topic of conversation when our CEO Safaraz Ali was invited to a local community radio station to share his views.

Inflation hits us all hard. Of course, inflation hits hardest the ‘poorer’ and the ‘average’ family. However, it’s not just about the immediate effect in your pocket where it hurts but on Social Mobility.

The longer-term effect on social mobility means people are less likely to climb the income ladder, and therefore also, the economically advantaged tend to stay at the top.

We all have heard the saying the ‘rich are getting richer and the poor poorer, yet this is not about polarisation or extremes but about all of us who regard ourselves as ‘average’ and are grateful for what we have as they many who are worse or a lot worse than us. 🤲🏼

The situation that’s been happening in South Asian and African countries for many years is happening here in the UK right now. Inequality is being driven further, and recent rises in inflation, especially fuel, food and energy costs, are intensifying the problem.

The UK government has a role; therefore, the next leader of the Conservative party and, consequently, the next Prime Minister plays an important part here.

There is talk of ‘levelling up’ the agenda, which is rightly so as not everyone shares equally in the UK’s success. It is said that whilst talent is spread equally across our country, the opportunity is not.

The government’s Levelling up programme is a mission to challenge and change that unfairness.

Levelling up means allowing everyone to flourish.

It means people everywhere are living longer and more fulfilling lives and benefiting from sustained living standards and well-being rises.

The reality is that this will take years, if not decades, to happen and for the impact to trickle down to things such as increasing public investment in less well-off regions of the UK. There is also talk of emphasising education, equalising opportunities and more investment at both preschool nurseries and further education levels in addition to your Schools.

The next thing and final thing from me is extra investment and support for vocational training, workplace qualification and courses, including apprenticeships and general reskilling and upskilling programmes—these need to be sharply focused on people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The above are things that the government, in my view, should be laser sharp focused on, but what can you do as individuals?

Awareness

Raise your awareness of things that will immediately help you and follow credible consumer champions such as Martin Lewis and others such like and be a little aware and sceptical of who else you listen to here - particularly 'social media influencers and any 'get rich or wealthy schemes'.

Talk

Talk to family, colleagues and other peers and seek to talk openly, share ideas and thoughts, and support each other.

Think

Think about and, where possible, action all the ways you can improve and grow yourself - embrace lifelong learning that benefits your career and business.

Save

Spend your time and money wisely on your children, giving them the best possible chance.

Open-minded

Remain open-minded and change from spending more time on entertaining and' time pass' content on your traditional streaming services, radios, TV and social media to more informative and infotainment-based content.

Levelling up is a long-term endeavour by the UK government; it is a programme of change that requires a fundamental shift; however, we can all do our bit and ensure we are better placed to sustain and grow the quality of life for us all.
