Catching up with Ben…

Ben had finished studying with us in June and called us, to update us on his situation following finishing his studies with the team back in June.

At a JobCentre Plus appointment in the Summer of 2020, Ben had enquired about courses to support people in health & social care jobs; his Job Coach decided to refer him to Pathway SkillsZone Burslem, where he met with Ffion to find out more about the opportunities available to him.

Following an interview with his Pathway Group advisor, Fifon identified that Ben had two years of experience working in Health & Social Care but had taken time off due to personal reasons and was looking for support to return to the sector. Ben further shared his aspirations of moving into nursing with Ffion.

Following his success with his Functional Skills, Ben enrolled on to the Level 1 Award in Introduction to Health and Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings (RFQ), aimed at giving Ben up to date knowledge and confidence of the Health and Social care industry, including:

•        Understanding the range of service provision and roles within health and social care

•        Understanding the principles and values in health and social care

Shortly after completing his studies, Ben utilised his new skills, updated CV and confidence to secure an interview and successfully gain the position of Care Assistant at Bradwell Hall nursing home located in Staffordshire.

Ben has been enjoying working again, completing a weekly shift pattern that includes nights. Having been in his role for just over three weeks, Ben has noted an improvement in his confidence and ability to communicate with others. So much, he was inspired to apply for bank staff opportunities with Royal Stoke University Hospital of North Staffordshire, setting him on track to secure opportunities in nursing roles. Ben has been successful with his application and is looking forward to commencing regular shifts at the hospital.

Ben recalls his time with the team as a positive experience and is very grateful for the support and guidance.
