Apprehension to Aspiration

Jackie first encountered Pathway Group at a local event, where she experienced mini treatments provided by beauty learners. With a lifelong interest in beauty, yet a professional background largely in administrative roles, Jackie found herself intrigued by the possibility of retraining. However, she had initial doubts — questioning whether she was too old, foolish for considering a career change, and capable of returning to education after so long away.

Despite these reservations, Jackie made the decision to enrol and joined Pathway Group’s Burslem Centre cohort in May 2024 — a decision that marked the beginning of a remarkable personal and professional transformation.

Learning Experience and Personal Growth

From day one, Jackie has fully immersed herself in the learning experience. Her dedication to mastering practical skills has been evident, with her even mentally rehearsing massage movements while standing in the supermarket queue — a testament to her commitment.

Jackie’s academic progress has also been noteworthy. Initially anxious about her first assignment, she expressed concern over her ability to meet modern educational standards. However, her submission demonstrated a strong grasp of the subject, requiring only minor adjustments. Since then, Jackie has consistently produced high-quality work, showing both determination and capability.

She also plays a vital role within the classroom environment. Always willing to support her peers, Jackie shares her techniques and learning strategies, guiding others with ease and encouragement. Her natural communication skills and empathy have made her a highly respected and valued class member.

Community Engagement and Practical Excellence

Pathway Group places a strong emphasis on community involvement as a way to prepare learners for real-world working environments. Jackie has embraced this ethos wholeheartedly.

She has participated in numerous in-centre and external community events, offering treatments to members of the public with professionalism and care. Notably, she has delivered services through the NHS Talking Therapies wellbeing bus at Freeport Shopping Centre and Trentham Gardens, where she not only performed treatments but also confidently promoted Pathway Group and encouraged public engagement.

Jackie has demonstrated excellent client care, particularly during a moving experience at an NHS event, where she offered a calming treatment to a patient undergoing daily chemotherapy. Her compassion and skill during this interaction inspired her to pursue voluntary work in hospice care — a path she is now exploring further with the support of Pathway Group.

Balancing Responsibilities and Building a Vision

Jackie manages her studies alongside caring responsibilities for her husband and has expressed a desire to offer treatments within her retirement village. This flexible, person-centred approach not only reflects her realistic planning but also her sincere commitment to providing a service that enhances wellbeing in her community.

Conclusion

Jackie’s journey is one of courage, transformation, and renewed purpose. She entered the programme with self-doubt but quickly proved to be a capable, compassionate, and passionate learner. Her positive energy, willingness to help others, and clear passion for the beauty industry make her an inspiration to peers and tutors alike.

As she continues on her pathway — potentially into voluntary hospice work and localised treatment provision — Jackie stands as a shining example of the power of adult learning, and the lifelong opportunities it can unlock.
