Supporting the Finance Manager of a Wolverhampton-based charity to upskill and improve the performance of his team

We recently met with Paul Tabor, Access to Business’s Finance Manager, about his journey with the Level 3 Diploma in Management.

For five years, Paul has been fulfilling his role as the Finance and Monitoring Officer for the Wolverhampton-based charity. However, in January 2022, he was given the opportunity to step into the role of Finance Manager; this would be a new challenging role for Paul.

The role of the finance manager has long been one of the critical roles at any organisation operating, a prevalent destination for those in the financial field, and those with a firm grasp of numbers and good analytical and communication skills may be the ideal job.

For five years, Paul has been fulfilling his role as the Finance and Monitoring Officer for the Wolverhampton-based charity, having just completed his ACCA in 2020, which led to his promotion to Finance Manager.

However, in January 2022, Paul was promoted to the role of Finance Manager; this would be a new, exciting but challenging role for Paul.

The role of the finance manager has long been one of the critical roles at any organisation operating, a prevalent destination for those in the financial field, and those with a firm grasp of numbers and good analytical and communication skills may be the ideal job.

As part of his development, Paul asked his manager to undertake a Management Skills programme, as his new role involved managing a team of officers.

Paul heard about the Level 3 Diploma in Management through his employer; after researching the qualification, he understood that the qualification helps to develop skills, knowledge and behaviours and competency in Management.

Areas of development would include:

  • Managing team performance
  • Managing personal and professional development
  • Understanding business

Additionally, a variety of units are available covering subjects such as:

  • Project management
  • Managing budgets
  • Implementing operational plans

Paul then spoke with his manager, who reached out to Serco regarding the Adult Skills for Work fund, providing training for employed and self-employed individuals in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley and Sandwell.

The level 3 Diploma in Management – “This qualification is a great guide in being the management role. Alongside gaining experience as a manager, I can use the knowledge I am learning to be an effective manager. An example of this would be being neutral when dealing with conflict and how to naturalise the issue and get an effective situation outcome.”

Paul shared his aim of developing the proper knowledge and confidence when it comes to being an effective Finance Manager and dealing with staff and any issues that may arise—having the right balance and attitude towards business and individual needs and managing them accordingly.

“In the long run, this qualification will allow me to have better job prospects and job security.”
