Overcoming Barriers and Securing a Fulfilling Career

Our Stories

In the face of multiple barriers to employment, Rebecca , a determined mother of two, embarked on a transformative journey with Pathways to Employment. Struggling with long-term unemployment spanning over 16 years, Rebecca faced challenges that included a loss of confidence, difficulty finding work with children, and a lack of clear direction in her career path. The last time she held a job was in 2021, and she needed support to navigate the competitive job market.

Recognising the need for a tailored approach, Rebecca’s Job Coach, Nicole, went beyond employability assessment and CV-building basics. Together, they identified and strategically addressed vital barriers using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Nicole worked closely with Rebecca to rebuild her confidence and direction. Discussions about potential roles led them to consider care positions aligned with Rebecca’s existing skills. A Care-specific CV was crafted, showcasing her abilities and potential in the field. Nicole further facilitated Rebecca’s enrollment in a care course with Novas Training, providing her with the necessary skills and certification.

The Better Off Calculations (BOC) were employed to illustrate the tangible benefits of employment, reinforcing Rebecca’s motivation. Mock interviews and personalised job-search sessions refined her approach, ensuring she was well-prepared for the competitive job market.

Rebecca’s testimony reflects the impact of the support received: “I have struggled to get back into work, so I was put on a programme with Pathways to help and support. Nicole has supported me a lot during my appointments and referred me to Nova; I have had support with travel to my course and work, childcare for my course, etc.”

Rebecca secured two job offers post-training, a testament to her newfound skills and confidence. Opting for a Care Assistant role, she officially signed her contract on August 3, 2023, marking the beginning of a fulfilling career.

The success story continues. Post-employment support was integral to Rebecca’s continued success. Pathways to Employment provided ongoing assistance, including support with travel to the course, childcare during training, and additional aid such as Asda vouchers and the first month’s travel to work.

Rebecca’s journey exemplifies the power of personalised, holistic support in overcoming barriers to employment. Through the dedication of her Job Coach and the comprehensive Pathways to Employment program, Rebecca found a job. She embarked on a fulfilling career, breaking the cycle of long-term unemployment and creating a brighter future for herself and her family.
