Enhancing Beauty with Community Engagement

In recent community engagement sessions, our Level 3 Combined Beauty Therapy Skills cohorts have demonstrated technical proficiency and a profound commitment to making a positive impact. The beneficiaries of our learners’ burgeoning skills are the attendees at ABLE, a day programme for individuals over 18 living with learning disabilities in Stoke-on-Trent.

Hanley Library: Initially tasked with providing hand and arm massages, our beauty learners, under the guidance of their tutor, astutely adapted to the needs of the ABLE group. Recognising the learners’ natural talent and enthusiasm for facial skincare, the tutor empowered them to demonstrate facial cleansing, toning, and moisturising. Armed with a tailored procedure and skincare theory pack, the learners rose to the challenge, showcasing their emerging skills and confidence.

Navigating the Real World: Despite initial nerves, the learners surpassed expectations, delivering competent hand and arm massages and educating the attendees on facial skincare routines. Paired with individuals with varying learning needs, the learners exhibited professionalism and empathy. They seamlessly incorporated theory knowledge, advising on suitable products and personalised homecare routines.

Client-Care Skills and Adaptability: Drawing from their tutor’s 18 years of industry experience, the learners demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt their client-care skills to a more vulnerable demographic. They effectively communicated complex skincare information in simplified terms, ensuring their clients comprehended and appreciated the advice. Discussing product pricing and suggesting DIY skincare solutions showcased the learners’ compassion and understanding of their client’s financial constraints.

Tunstall Town Hall: Following an invitation back to ABLE at their new premises in Tunstall Town Hall, the learners further elevated their performance. With increased confidence and organisational skills, they efficiently managed larger groups, obtaining necessary permissions and adhering to commercial treatment timelines. The session’s success prompted an enthusiastic invitation for future collaborations.

Real-world Reflection and Business Insight: Post-session reflections included discussions on the commercial viability of their skills. Drawing on the tutor’s industry insights, the learners explored potential earnings, realising the profitability of shorter, well-marketed treatments. This practical understanding taught them the importance of adaptability and flexibility in various working settings.

Community Impact and Future Plans: Beyond financial considerations, the learners reflected on the altruistic satisfaction of giving back to the community. Inspired by this experience, they are planning a charity event after their course, underscoring their commitment to making a positive impact beyond the classroom.

In the capable hands of Beauty Tutor Nadia Brown, our learners are not just mastering their craft but evolving into community-focused professionals ready to make a meaningful difference.
